The firm has a broad value proposition with services across a number of specialist areas, including; Employment Law,  Family Law, Commercial and Civil Litigation, Commercial and Residential Property, and Wills, Probates & Trusts.

SPL are looking to recruit an ambitious and driven Private Client Associate to join their Wills, Probate and Trusts Team.  This opportunity would ideally suit an experienced solicitor or Associate who is looking for a new, progressive and vibrant environment to progress their career.

The firm has recently launched a new confident brand and website, is implementing a number of digital services, has a particularly strong client base amongst high net worth individuals and can offer fantastic work with some great clients. It can also offer extremely stylish and well-thought-out office space within which to work.

Despite its long history, this is certainly not a traditional law firm!  Whilst you will be working with a very well-established team, there is no glass ceiling, so, for those who seek it, there are opportunities for real progression.

The firm is looking for a solicitor or Associate who is confident in his or her own skin, forges strong relationships with the business community, is agile, has a confident personal brand and can bring genuine enthusiasm to work.

The attributes required for the role are as follows;

  • A personable, confident and articulate communicator;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Must be able to build strong, valuable relationships with clients;
  • Excellent client care skills and attitude;
  • Sound knowledge of all areas of law within the practice in order to refer appropriate clients and to work collaboratively with colleagues;
  • Self-managing – able to comfortably run own caseload with a broad range of private client matters;
  • Must be able to achieve set targets and KPI’s;
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills;
  • Able to up-sell, on-sell and cross-sell services;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Proficient in the use of IT, MS Office, MS Excel and CMS;
  • Seasoned and effective networker.

The role will be integral to the success of the business and the development of those who aspire to progress through the firm; Associates are expected to be ambassadors for the firm, and act as mentors and role models to those who they work alongside. There is an expectation that Associates will support the Partners and CEO by strengthening and expanding the cross-firm Associate team to grow the firm in line with the ambition to be best in class.

In addition to the day to day responsibilities of being a Solicitor, the Associate has other responsibilities and objectives to support the Head of Department that they work to.

There are 3 distinct headings under which the role has responsibility;

Team Performance

  • Responsibility for being an integral part of the management and success of their department or team;
  • Supporting the Partner/Head of Department to oversee and contribute to the strategic direction of the firm, supporting the delivery of the departmental business plan;
  • Achieving and encouraging peers to deliver results through high performance;
  • Support the HoD to achieve KPI’s – financial performance,  WIP, billing and debt management;
  • Develop commercial awareness (work with HoD for support, or via trustee positions)
  • Become an effective role model, coach and mentor.

Business Development

  • Support the development of the departmental Business Development and Marketing Strategy;
  • Raise your profile and make connections to build powerful networks to feed the firm as well as your own team/department;
  • Develop your own skills to become a lawyer marketer, to sell not only yourself but others;
  • Target better clients and better work;
  • Work collaboratively with others (both internally and externally) to create opportunities;
  • Be passionate and innovative;
  • Contribute to, and support the ambitious business development culture within the firm, ensuring that it does not stagnate.

Management and Development of the Firm

  • Promote good ethics and high standards in regards to Quality and Compliance;
  • Keep knowledge of SRA regulations and code of ethics up to date, and to understand the impact of changes within the industry on the firm;
  • To attend and participate in monthly Associates meetings with occasional attendance at the Partners meetings as required;
  • To work and behave in a professional manner and within the highest ethical standards of the profession;
  • To promote and embrace Equality and Diversity across the firm and within the business communities we engage with.

Targets and key performance indicators (KPI)

In addition to a fee earning target, there are measurable KPI’s in regards to;

  • Events – regular attendance at events and managing at least one departmental event per annum;
  • New business development – a minimum of 3 hours per month to be spent on targeted and measurable business development activity and networking;
  • Internal referrals
  • Referrals to third parties – to follow the brokerage process and make appropriate referrals;
  • Articles – contribution to writing content;
  • Social media – publishing content and promoting yourself and the firm om an ongoing basis;
  • Innovation – contributing to new products, services, process improvements and technology to deliver services;
  • Peer to peer reviews and support.

This is a people-orientated firm; the whole team matters but individuals are given an opportunity to shine in their own right. The office is open plan so the ability to work together and share ideas is paramount. There is an impressive ratio of support staff to fee earners which means that your billing and debt recovery is taken care of, leaving you free to spend time with your clients.  Staff members are well looked after, with a range of innovative perks.

The role is open to those looking for full-time and there is also the ability to work from home.

This is a genuinely exciting time to be joining the firm!
